9:27 pm - Play Magazine scans (P4) + Papercraft

Yeah, it's me again... (cue groans) but I'm back with more magazine scans so you can get your fix of staff interviews and preview write-ups. ...And really, who can say no to that?
This time around it's Play Magazine's December 2008 issue complete with the spiffy Persona 4 cover. My guilt-ridden conscience was telling me to wait until it was out of print but by that time P4 would be out and what would be the point? I digress, if you enjoy the scans; go check out the full issue; it'll probably still be on the stands for another few weeks.

Content includes:
3 page Persona 4 preview
Interviews with:
Katsura Hashino (director/producer)
Shigenori Soejima (art director)
Q&A with Spencer Chi (Producer of Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine localization)

For your convenience, you can download the entire set of scans through these links:
(let me know if they expire/ having any trouble downloading them)

Or if you'd rather just view them online, knock yourself out:

the Cover Page one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten

One last thing: Megaten Papercrafts. Need I say more?

3:12 pm - Persona 2: Eternal Punishment Limited Reprint

As seen in the latest Atlus Newsletter, a limited re-release of Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (Region 1) is available exclusively through retailer Amazon (and Amazon.ca. It's not everyday that you see a company reprint a game released eight years ago, so if this sounds like something of interest to you, don't wait too long!

Here's a screen of the original newsletter in case you've missed it

4:41 am - Beta application open for SMT: Imagine Online

From RPGamer:

Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online, an MMORPG for the PC developed by Cave, has a lengthy history and was released in Japan in March, 2007. The game's release outside of Japan was questionable, but on September 9, 2008, Aeria Games announced that it had acquired Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online for release in North America and Europe. As of this week, North American and European fans of the Shin Megami Tensei series, or just MMO fans in general, are now able to sign up for Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online's closed beta. The closed beta application phase will run until December 1, 2008.

Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine Online is a free-to-play MMORPG, though players can choose to purchase various optional in-game items, such as clothing, accessories, and repair kits. The game is set in Tokyo, year 20XX, which has been mostly destroyed by the "Great Destruction." The survivors of this disaster built a massive tower, the Shinjuku Babel, which is the headquarters of an organization whose goal is to destroy the demons marauding throughout the world. Players become part of this organization, fighting against demons in addition to negotiating with them to switch sides. A demon fusing system is available to create new types of allied demons. It is also possible to ride around the world on certain demon mounts. The game's story plays out in the form of quests, called acts, and there are also various sidequests (including one which is required to begin riding demon mounts). Private dungeons can be accessed to hunt monsters with friends. Combat takes place in real-time, with players using various types of magic, weapons, armor, and items. There are no specific classes, though current players of the game have determined three basic skill builds: melee fighter, magic user, and gun fighter. The game is completely PvE-based, with no PvP currently implemented.

Interested applicants can begin the closed beta sign up process here. Selected players will be given access to the game shortly after December 1, 2008. The official North American and European release dates for Shin Megami Tensei: Online Imagine are still to be announced.

If it's been mentioned here, I missed it, and I figure there might be interest.

Amazon.com has pre-orders open for an exclusive Persona 4 Social Link Expansion Pack, for which you get some cool swag at the same time the game comes out. It looks like it's selling separately from the game, so if you've already got that pre-ordered elsewhere, you can still get the stuff.

There's a t-shirt, a calendar, a Kuma plushie, and a soundtrack CD (different tracks than the one that ships with the game, apparently). Not a bad deal for thirty bucks, in my opinion, though I really wish the shirt came a little smaller.

3:27 am - New Devil Summoner, Kaneko Interview, Nocturne Community, & more!

Just in case you haven't heard, earlier this week Atlus announced a new Devil Summoner title. It's called Raidou Kuzunoha Vs The Abadon King and apparently takes place after the first Raidou game. Some of the new features include being able to cast spells, ability to use two demons in battle and multiple endings. Interestingly, a limited edition version of the game will be available in Japan that comes packaged with yet another version of Nocturne in which Raidou will be playable. The Nocturne connections go beyond that, as the included scans hint at (hmmmm... I think I've seen that blonde boy before...) The game is slated for a October 23rd Japanese release, the official website can be found here. No word on any locallized version but keep your fingers crossed!

Here's the aforementioned scans:

(note: the remainder of this entry has been re-posted from sumarucity. So if you already read my post there, please disregard this. Thanks.)

While skimming the magazine shelves at a local bookstore today the words "Kazuma Keneko Interview" stood out. It was blazed on the cover of the August issue of Otaku USA and while I thought the $9.99 price tag was a bit overpriced for a periodical, in the end I caved in. Oh the price of fandom! So imagine my surprise when I open up to the interview pages and find them plastered with Shigenori Soejima's designs for Persona 3. I can only guess that the graphic artist was unaware that Kaneko didn't design these characters. Thankfully, the interviewer seemed much more familiar with the franchise. I've scanned the four interview pages, so you can check it out. Enjoy!

Next order of business, I thought I'd shamelessly plug introduce a community I put together, tokyoconception . It's dedicated to Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne and, yes, it is four years overdue. The title still gets a lot of recognition despite its age, and with the recent reprint, the timing seemed right. I'd be more than happy to affiliate with other Megaten communities, so let me know if you're interested. I hope to see you there!

Finally... I'm pretty behind on posting this bit of news (better late than never?). PAL Region fans, Persona 3: FES has been confirmed by KOEI for an October 17th release.

11:21 pm - I hope no one hates my guts right now

I'm not that internet savvy so i didn't know about ljcut. I apologize.

Plus the main reason i posted the pic here was to get opinions from people who like the SMT games since the manga will be in the same vein.

I apologize if i pissed anyone off. It wasn't intended.

12:59 am - hello hello

How is everyone doing? Hopefully well. I start my job tomorrow and i am psyched about it. But before I head to sleep i had a quick question. Does anyone know where i can find episodes of Persona Trinity Soul, subtitled online. I have watched 1-15 on youtube but the rest are raw and i can't follow it.  If anyone knows where i can find 15-18 please let me know.

And i trust you guys and gals a bunch so can ya'll give me your personal opinion on this character i created for a manga i want to start work on called Wonderland Burning? I know about the arm being a little short. Other than that do you like it?

Thanks again

12:51 am - Help needed and good news

Well hello, my name is Benji and i came to this community to make friends and talk about the Shin Megami Tensei series.  I hope i get to know the people on here and make new friends.

Well first i have a question for anyone willing to answer it. Persona 3 FES just came out at the local Gamestop and i just found a copy of Digital Devil Saga as well. I'm not sure which one to get and could use some advice on that.

For any fans of the P3 game i found an excellent link for high quality scans of the manga written and drawn by Shūji Sogabe. Enjoy

And if you're short on cash like me you can catch the first 15 episodes of Persona Trinity Soul on youtube

6:42 pm - Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne Re-Print

My apologizes to those who already heard this elsewhere, as it turns out Nocturne is being reprinted. Details are a little scarce at the moment and I only know of one website that has it available to order: PlayAsia. Which retailers (online or otherwise) will carry stock remains to be seen.
Although there has been no press release from Atlus USA regarding this, the administer over at their official forums has confirmed it's legitimacy. It's identical to the original NTSC/region 1 print with the exception of the soundtrack, which has been omitted.
So if you haven't had a chance to experience this game yet, now would be the perfect opportunity. Yes guys, Atlus really loves your money you.

edit (April 24th): Some other tidbits I thought I'd mention...
* Play-Asia is running a weekly special on series 6 of the "Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne One Coin" figures. They're only $1.99 a pop. ...I know everyone can't wait to proudly display that Astaroth figure in your own home (even if you don't admit it.) Anyway, the sale ends in five days, or when supply runs out.
* I still haven't seen new copies of Nocturne being sold outside Play-Asia, yet interestingly enough, used copies are now available through the Gamespot website for $39.99 for both Nocturne and the first Digital Devil Saga.

10:11 am - FES? in my America? it's more likely than you think.

It's looking to be more and more likely that Persona 3:FES might make U.S. shores. Some voiceactors had already leaked that they were working on a "Persona expansion", but new advertisements from Atlus make it seem pretty damn obvious what's up their sleeve.

(fake lj cut, away!)

Can I get my hopes up yet?

5:35 pm

So I have recently started up on Shin Megami Tensei -- as in the one on Super Famicom, yeah, I have a thing for playing games over a decade past their sell-by date.

However, the only FAQ/walkthrough I've seen on the internet, the one by Re-Miel that's posted at GameFAQs -- well, it really seems mostly aimed at translating everything and helping people get through the plot, rather than answering the kinds of things I usually find myself wondering about, like "am I completely and totally doomed if I go do x plot event at y level?" and "can I look up how good this weapon is before I buy it?" and the like.

Does anyone know of any other guides out there, or should I just switch out saves a lot in case I need to backtrack and keep my fingers crossed?

10:57 pm - Allow me to introduce myself...

I'm ArcherXtreme, and I got started playing the SMT series with Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, Loved it, looked up more and found out about the other games and had my soul sucked in (not literally... I think). Right now I switch between playing Persona 3 and Devil Summoner, depending on which one I'm stuck on at the time. I also have a copy of Devil Children: White Book that I'd like to play, but I'm putting off until I learn Japanese, or find a translated script. Aside from the games themselves, I'm also interested in cosplaying them, as I'll be attending A-Kon come June. I'm only planning this far ahead because I'm not sure where or how to get the costuming done.
It's a pleasure to meet you all!

1:07 pm - Build suggestions.
futomimi I've been asking around for some "quick playthrough" build ideas for Shin Megami Tensei III -- basically, a build [stats and skills/magic] that would get me through the game as quickly as possible [without running from battles] -- but I've not really gotten any good responses anywhere I've asked, so I figured I'd try asking around on LiveJournal. It's not for speed running purposes or anything, I'm just looking for ways to cut the normal playthrough time in half [if possible]. Hopefully, someone here has some suggestions, because LiveJournal is the last place I could think of to ask.

4:20 pm - Digital Devil Story Novels Translation

Thought you might all want to know that Masakado over at DDS Translations has been translating and sharing the Digital Devil Story novels that the Megaten universe is based on. The translations are coming out at a good rate and the translations themselves are excellent - the books, however, are delightfully trashy but also a good reference to see what Megaten/Persona has built upon.

(cross posted to sumarucity, iwatodai, and demon_diet - sorry for any repetition on your friend's list.)

3:40 pm - "Fan Book"

Can anyone tell me anything about this? I went looking for the Digital Devil Saga manga or any artbooks and found this. The translation site I used said it was an 'official fan book,' but there was a lot of stuff it couldn't translate. Is it worth getting for someone who doesn't know Japanese (any art)?

I'm looking for Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga artbooks, or SMT in general. Does anyone have any reccs, preferably with links to the items on amazon.co.jp? Thank you.
